The vibrations are caused by a small vibrating mechanism inside the pillow which runs on 2 AA batteries (included). The cover can be opened with a zipper so that batteries can be placed in the vibrator. This also allows the cushion to be removed with a wet cloth.

The vibrating mechanism makes a soft sound, which some highly sensitive children may find unpleasant.
